Even More Quiet Book Pages

Making quiet books with binder rings makes it possible to
continue adding pages at any time.

how to make the  cover with rings can be found here

In 2012 I started a quiet book for my grandson and have shared as I added pages.
Here is a picture of all the pages I have already shared from the book.

Since then I have made two more pages:

A Weather Page

Map of Canada puzzle page

These pages are good teaching tools but still fun. if you want to know any details
of how I made this or need a pattern just ask in the comments section.

Finished Quiet Book

A Quiet book is one of the most time consuming projects to do but also very
satisfying when you see a child you love getting enjoyment out of it.

A few years ago I made a quiet book for my grandson Levi.

Posts about it can be found HERE  and HERE and HERE.

I felt it was about time I made one for his brother Owen.  I have shared all the different pages
with you in several previous posts.   This blog is about the finishing of the book.

After making plans for all the pages I laid them out in the order that seemed to make sense.
There was no particular theme to the book, just pages I thought my grandson would like.

The Book Plan:

The Finished Pages:

Page 1

Pages 2 & 3

Pages 4 & 5

Pages 6 & 7

Pages 8 & 9

Page 10

The Quiet Book Cover:

With the pages finished it was time to make the cover.

I used a picture of Owen in the snow and printed it on an avery fabric sheet.
How it's done is described in THIS POST

The picture was then sewn on the fabric that would be the front of my book.
It was edged with grosgrain ribbon for texture and to protect the edges from fraying.

I used some leftover fabric from my stash.  I had used it as the lining for  THIS PROJECT.
Because of its weight and sturdiness I felt it would also make a good cover for this book

Two pieces of fabric were used: cut the size to fit my pages plus seams and overlap
(for securing the cover to itself in the back). I sewed right sides together, turned
it right side out and sewed around the entire edge .

A strip of fabric was used to serve as the spine. It was sewn
on the cover leaving openings to fit three rings evenly. The lines
for the openings were sewn over several times for strength.

Three velcro squares hold the book closed.

The finished book! I am so happy to be done.

The best part of this project was watching my grandsons playing with their quiet books.

Owen seemed to love it!

I hope through sharing all this I can inspire you to make a quiet book for a child in your life. I am sorry I didn't photograph the actual process but when I get going on something I find it hard to stop for pictures as I am working. If there are any questions feel free to ask in the comments section.

Owen's Quiet Book Page 10

The final page I made for Owen's quiet book is a mailbox page. He seemed to love this page the most!

The Plan:

Felt Print sheet for mailbox page:

The miniature parcels, notepad and pencil are the only things that are not fabric. I found the little
parcels a long time ago at Michaels on sale and just thought they were so cute and knew I would
use them at some time. You could make parcels out of felt as well. Everything else is double
regular felt except for the Canada post sign which is printed on fabric, the letters which are
stiffened felt and the envelopes which are single layer felt.

The one letter is just zig-zag but on the other I used the alphabet feature on my sewing machine and wrote "to owen" on one side and "with love" on the other. I only have one size of letters on my machine so I could not write more in the space allowed.

The letters and parcels can be put in the mailbox slot.

The mail can be retrieved by opening the door on the bottom of the mailbox. I put interfacing on the door inside to give it strength and so it wouldn't stretch. A strip of velcro holds the door closed and a bead is attached for the handle.  Owen loved writing on pieces of the notepaper and mailing them.

All the mail fits in the mailbag when not in use.

I was happy to see my grandsons have fun with this page.

Owen's Quiet Book Pages 8 & 9

Owen loves Christmas and even asked for a Christmas tree party for his birthday so I just
had to make a Christmas tree page in his book.

The plans:

Christmas tree page plan:

Christmas Wreath page plan:

Felt patterns print sheet for Christmas pages:

The Christmas Tree Page:

This page was so much fun to do. I found the christmas lights at Fabricland and the rick-rack garland came out of a package of notions I found at my local thrift store. I doubled up all the felt as in previous pages to give it more weight and for the pot I used fabric and left the edges a little rough for texture.

The bows on the presents can be untied and retied even though it might be a little hard
for a child it is fun for a parent to do this with them.

I made some ornaments for the tree. The angels were simple felt shapes. the candy canes
are made with stiffened white felt and narrow ribbon. The green balls were printed on
fabric, as in previous posts, because I liked the pattern on them and they are so small
that it would be hard to make them this detailed.

Owen can decorate the tree. The ornaments attach with small velcro dots.

The presents open with snaps and there are small treasures inside attached with ribbons.

I found these cute little nativity buttons at fabric land and made a little felt stable to
put them in. I padded the stable to make the backs of the button sink in a bit.

The garland can detach and be woven through the small plastic loops (stitch markers for knitting)

.

The garland has a thin piece of velcro on it which matches the piece just under the corner of the tree.

I really like how this page turned out!

The Wreath Page:

The same decorations are used for the wreath page. It also has small velcro dots. The
`double felt pocket is lined with interfacing and works well to hold all the decorations.

I hope this gives you some inspiration for your Christmas quiet book page.

Happy Sewing!

Owen's Quiet Book Pages 6 & 7

The inspiration for these to pages was found HERE. I looked at
pictures  of real forklifts and dump-trucks to make my design.

The plans:

I used pictures of my grandson to make the drivers of the forklift and truck.  My plans
changed a bit when fitting  everything on the page. I modified the forklift  to make the
mast as high as possible so there would be more up and down movement of the load

Felt print sheet for forklift page:

Felt print sheet for dump truck:

Fabric print sheet for both pages:

How the forklift works:

After cutting out the shape for the lift part of the forklift the main part (called the carriage) is
folded in  half and a cord or shoelace is sewn to it leaving enough length on each end to fit the
space where it will lift. A bead is attached to each end after the cord has been threaded
through  two grommet holes on the large black piece (called the mast) which is left
open on the one side.  I added fusible interfacing to the mast so the carriage would move
smoothly. I also added a piece of stiffened felt to hold the forks in place. They are velcro
pieces so they can attach to the squares which are held on by another piece of velcro at
 the bottom of the page.

By pulling on the beads Owen can lift the load up and down.
The centre of the wheels on both pages are buttons.

The dirt piles lift off the velcro squares and fit in the dump truck. The box of the dump truck is attached with a grommet and a button and stays in place with a snap near the cab. When the snap is open Owen can dump the load out of the back.

Button and snap
Owen as the driver of both vehicles.

Owen seemed to like both of these pages.
Though time consuming they were a lot of fun to make.
I used all the tips given in the previous posts about this
quiet book in regard to using double felt and sewing.

I hope I gave you a few good ideas.
